Subject: My 37th Birthday Party
Hey All-

I was first able to get Keller to play at my folks' place in 2000 (see below for the link to it). Two years later, he was doing his usual spring run through SoCal. I got in touch with him and was able schedule a second gig, also in my folks' backyard and this happened to be on my 37th birthday. =^D

This time, I got to play with him on four songs that should have an asterisk above: "Gold Plated" and "Bird Song" to end set one, and then No Expectations" -> "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy" (which I mildly butchered a half a verse when KW egged me up to the mic). The "Bird Song" that was, for me, pretty intense. I played the lion's share the solos. You can pretty easily make out the difference between the 10 string and my dry Martin 6 string; also, I'm panned fairly hard left in the mix.

The solo order goes: Keller, from 2:54-3:30, me from 3:31-5:12, Keller from 5:17-5:35, me from 5:41-6:05, at which point, Keller added the delay loop--so it sounds like we're repeating the same thing--yet I was still soloing and between what was looped and what we contiuned to play, it kind of gets lost, though still enjoyable in my opinion to listen to. Keller faded out the loop at 6:37. I finish my outro at 6:50, then we begin the chording crescendo. I also did the solo on "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy".

For those who like to know the tech details, this was a matrix of the direct sbd feed from the amazing Lou Gosain and an audience recording using the same AKG414 mics that were used to make the 4-5-00 KW show, also at my folks' home, which you can find here:

http://www.archive.org/details/kw2000-04-05.matrix.shnf

The recordings were made by Rob Boyle and Whitney Padgett. Again, big props to Blue Lou Gosain for being an insane soundman and a terrific human.

Keller's a great guy too, one of the most amazing yet humble, down-to-earth musicians you'd ever want to meet. What's pretty amazing to me after all these years is that he was willing to play my birthday when three months later, he was *headlining* in front of 80,000 folks at Bonnaroo.

It remains, not surprisingly, the most incredible birthday party I've ever had.

Thanks again, KW and Lou. And to Emily (Keller's wife) and their dog Earl, who was playing with our dogs and whom you can hear barking in the background at points throughout the show.

What a night!

Eric
